Telling tales: the last word

Day 5 june 19

Layne arranges the chairs in square, then asks Phil to play the piano as we wander in and seat ourselves.  Telling about someone else's first crush/kiss in his/her voice...our first dance,  our first church experience, what is beautiful to us....
Layne:  I want you to.....
But first we have a visitor.  Michael is an actor from Toronto who made a theatre piece with Layne about his quite eventful life.  He did a bit for us that knocked my socks off!

So now what happens?  We haven't a clue and can't wait to find out!  Thank you Layne & Randy.

Telling tales

Day one / june 15

Randy has brought theatre director Layne Coleman to work with us for 5 days.  This isn't dance, it's words, and Randy says he's just 'a fly on the wall'....

We sit in a semi-circle at the Granville Ferry Community Hall and listen to Layne's gentle, easy voice explain how he works.  We'll build a play together he says.
Layne listening

Each of us takes a turn in the 'hot seat' and talks about our first theatre experience and our first impressions of Annapolis Royal.  Turns out we're all come-from-aways; the closest to Annapolis is Terry, who is from Lawrencetown.

There is a lot of laughter and a few tears.  And it is endlessly fascinating;  most of us  have known each other for years, but it turns out there are lots of things we can learn about each other.

Layne asks us to listen, then to tell that person's story in his/her voice.  'It'll be easier that way,' he says.

Day 2 / june 16

We're getting the hang of it now.  Sit in a semi-circle,listen to Layne give the assignment, and take the hot seat.  Among the stories we tell: a 'box canyon' moment,  a memorable local, a worst winter.

Day 3 / june 17

And now for something completely different... As Phil gives a brief history of Annapolis Royal, we repeat each of his sentences.   Call and response, or a litany!  We do the same with Terry listing 7 things you need to know to live here.  Then Wayne and George go at it as French (Boucher) against English (Barron).  Then it's on to first kiss, first skate, and bowling.

Day 4 / june 18

Today we start putting it all together.  We try to remember all the stories we've told... no easy task! and then Layne starts staging us.
Writing it all down
Here's what we're gonna do...

We do a lot of this!

Poetry & Pasta

June 14, 2015

17 angels gathered at Chief Angel Randy Glynn's house for a pot-luck pasta and poetry evening;  several angels were recently returned from travels in Thailand, Turkey, and Ottawa and we had a visiting angel, theatre director Layne Coleman from Toronto.

Aside from good food and copious amounts of wine, we celebrated Randy's 65th birthday with cake, candles and a  rousing chorus of 'Happy Birthday to You'!

The poetry was funny, moving, sad, contemplative, and aside from spoken words,  grunted by Wayne and Terry (thanks to their grand daughter's first attempts at language).

Melissa made the cake

Randy blew out the candles

and read the card...

photographers everywhere
We watched the video of DITTA in Etobicoke.... with rapt attention.  We picked out every little variation,  decided that nothing comes close to Phil's oboe, and that they did the piece proud!  I feel a little bit like a parent that has launched a kid into the world.
